For the first time this July I was going to visit Albufeira in Portugal with my boyfriend and his family, and I was so excited!
My whole life (23 years to be exact) I have been going to the same place in Italy with my family, and had never really seen anything else, other than small trips with my school to Berlin and so on.
I was used to lie on the beach every single day for two weeks and doing the same thing with my family – it’s like after so many years we have a routine – sort of. So Portugal was an amazing experience for me!
We flew to Faro in Portugal, and then rented a car and drove for like a half an hour to get to Albufeira which was nothing like I expected it to be!
We got to stay in a five star hotel just outside Albufeira named NAU Hotels and Spa which was in São Rafael and everything was so calm, no noises or loud kids – I would really recommend this hotel! We just had a lot of drinks by the pool and a LOT of relaxation which I needed so much. If I could travel for a living – I would.
Anyway in contrast to Italy with my family we got to see so much! We went kayaking on a Tuesday, tried sports activities on the water by the beach, went to a lot of different restaurants, drove to other beaches just to explore and had a lot of drinks. It was so different from what I was used to and I LOVED IT!
The good thing was that whenever we needed some action we just drove to Albufeira and the city was full of life. It was so mesmerizing to experience, and we had dinner with a view, a lot of champagne, went to karaoke bars and bought cork purses and bags (which they are actually known for!). It was just amazing.
Other than that it was all so different from Italy because of the cliffs on the beach, the sea urchins on the rocks, the different activities and cold water (jesus! In Italy we weren’t even cooled down).
One of my favorite things we did there though, was escaping to another island. We drove to Olhão which is just 45 minutes away from Albufeira and hopped on a small boat that took us to a small island with a lighthouse where the villains had their summer houses – they were so pretty! All yellow and cute and everything was decorated. Walking through the island we found an excluded beach with a reggae bar and we spend the day there. Every trouble you might’ve had just went away like that and it was really tropical. In the afternoon we took the boat back to Olhão and had dinner at an amazing restaurant before we drove home – now that’s a life I could live!
To finish off this trip has made me want to travel even more because I’ve realized how much there is to see out there and sometimes I really do think about that we only live once and that we need to enjoy it as much as possible. Traveling will make me feel complete and I hope that I will be able to do it a lot more in the future.
